Every responsible member must have the courage of his responsibilities, exacting from others a proper respect for his work and properly respecting the work of others.
At one point I began encountering difficulties as an organiser within our grouping. I was making a lot of commitments, a lot of promises and not always following through. It was becoming a problem. Indeed, my ability to fulfill my duties was being hampered by my faltering reputation. One of my closest comrades, my best friend in BSN, soon pulled me aside and essentially read me the riot act. He understood the need for all of us within our grouping to be accountable and responsible. He took it upon himself to call me out and alert me to my errors but also to the possibilities that existed for transformation. His solution for my organisational issues was for me to purchase an agenda. I was, of course, mortified by the situation. It was a painful but necessary scolding. My “brother” was alerting me to my deficiencies and failure because he believed that I was capable of better. He understood, like Cabral, that we all must be accountable both for our actions and our inaction. Almost a quarter century on he is the godfather of my son and I am the godfather of his daughter. Today, I understand his intervention today as an act of love.
